The Wii is Nintendo's fifth major console and was released worldwide in late 2006. Significantly, the Wii is Nintendo's first truly successful console since the Super Nintendo. As of June, 2010, the company has shipped over 73 million Wii units, easily outpacing the sales figures of its rivals, Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. If these figures hold, Nintendo will claim its first decisive victory in the console market since the release of the NES. The Wii was explicitly and successfully marketed to casual gamers, partially accounting for its high sales, and implements an intuitive and innovative motion control scheme. However, its focus on the casual market coupled with its esoteric controls have alienated many, with several major publishers ignoring the console resulting in few standout titles.
