Nintendo Entertainment System

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES for short) is Nintendo's first console and was released in 1985 in North America and a year later in Europe. It is considered to have been the savior of the industry in the United States after the so-called 'video game crash' that occurred in 1983. For this reason, it is often cited as the most important video game console of all-time. It was the first system to feature games in many of Nintendo's modern day stalwart series, such as The Legend of Zelda and Metroid, as well as iconic third party series like Mega Man and Castlevania. It was discontinued in 1995, giving it one of the longest commercial tenures of any console. The NES is perhaps best known for its assortment of high quality platformer games.
