Personal Computer

The Personal Computer is the oldest video game platform, with the first video game, OXO, a simple adaptation of tic-tac-toe, appearing on it in 1952. Spacewar!, from 1962, is generally considered to be the first original video game and the second video game overall after OXO. In the past, the PC market was similar to the console market, wherein various companies produced a litany of unique PCs that usually had primitive, manufacturer exclusive operating systems. Some famous early gaming PCs, such as the Amiga and Commodore 64, did not even have or require operating systems in the modern sense of the word. However, with the advent of advanced installable operating systems, hardware and software became separate enterprises allowing for greater customization on the part of the manufacturer. The most common operating system in the present day is Microsoft Windows, with Apple's Mac OS X and Linux a very distant second and third. Likewise, the overwhelming majority of PC games are produced for Windows with select titles designed for multiple operating systems. It is common for many of the more popular Windows games to be ported to Mac and Linux, but the number of Mac and Linux exclusive titles remains minute. Historically, the PC has been most notable for producing games in the role playing, strategy (both real-time and turn-based), first-person shooter, and point-and-click adventure genres.
