The PlayStation (abbreviated as PS1) was Sony's first video game console. It was released in 1994 in Japan and in 1995 in North America and PAL regions. The PlayStation was the best-selling console to that point and easily won the fifth-generation console wars for Sony with sales just over 100 million units. It differentiated itself from Nintendo by explicitly targeting a mature audience, a market formerly thought to be reserved for PC games. Additionally, the PlayStation was the first successful console to use CDs instead of cartridges, which cut the cost of games, allowed for better performance, and was more attractive to developers. Due to this ability to attract third-party developers, the PlayStation offered a fairly robust lineup of games. Specifically, it was responsible for popularizing the stealth and survival horror genres and brought JRPGs to the gaming mainstream. It was discontinued in 2006.
