The Game Boy Advance (GBA) was Nintendo's successor to the Game Boy / Game Boy Color handheld system. It was released worldwide in 2001. It features backward compatibility for previous Game Boy system cartridges and pioneered the use of a built-in light. It was a considerable success for Nintendo, enjoying a market that was virtually uncontested, with total sales over 80 million units. The GBA was made obsolete by the Nintendo DS in 2004.
