The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is Sony's seventh-generation follow up to the PlayStation 2. It was released in late 2006 in Japan and North America and in 2007 elsewhere. From a commercial perspective, the PS3 has been a considerable failure for Sony, which had appeared to have gained an insurmountable lead over its rivals with the PS2. It has sold about 38 million units worldwide, approximately half of what the Wii has sold, a few million less than the Xbox 360 and over 100 million fewer than the PS2. As with the Xbox 360, cross-platform games fill-out most of the system's notable library, with Little Big Planet standing as the only PS3 exclusive to have garnered a significant amount of acclaim thus far.
