147 - Myst
Year: 1993
Platform(s): PC
Designer(s): Rand Miller & Robyn Miller
Developer: Cyan
Publisher: Brøderbund Software
"While 'hardcore' gamers derided Myst when it was released, new gamers flocked to it. Its gorgeous graphics, simple interface, and slow pace struck a chord with people who weren't necessarily into jumping cartoon characters or reenacting D-Day. More importantly, Myst filled a necessary niche for burgeoning new technology forms, becoming a "killer app" for CD-ROM drives in home computers, a trend which would spread to home consoles quickly enough. Finally, and perhaps less appealingly, Brøderbund's aggressive rerelease strategy showed how a single game could exploit the way video games were sold in stores, helping Myst stay on best-seller lists for months and years after its release." - Rowan Kaiser, 1Up
