New List: Rock, Paper, Shotgun's Top PC Games Ever

Well, actually it's their "The 122 Best PC Games Of The Last 22 Years." More after the jump.

The affable writers over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun have finished their week-long feature detailing their picks for the top PC games ever made from the last 22 years. Older PC gamers should not be too upset though, because an addendum is being considered for the '80s to compliment it. The list is unranked, or, more precisely, arbitrarily ranked so as to point out the absurdity of ranking things, and presented in individual installments with each of the site's four main writers tackling about 20 or so games each. Additionally, former RPS writer Kieron Gillen and longtime RPS contributor Tim Stone each wrote shorter pieces containing approximately 10 games a piece. Despite appearances, the list was compiled as a collective. In total, including 'series' entries and 'see also' entries, there are about 130 games cited.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun is probably  my favorite video game website, so I was excited to see this list. It is wonderfully written and often insightful (e.g., I had never considered just how influential Guild Wars has been). I also commend them for fearlessly putting casual games like Minesweeper and Peggle alongside more hardcore gamer's games like X-Com and Counter-Strike. I would have liked for there to have been a few more esoteric selections -- there are some, to be sure (for instance, the intriguing Pathologic and about half of Tim Stone's war and flight sim heavy column) -- but it is nevertheless a great and highly recommended read.

Some game-specific notes about the impact of recent lists on Acclaimed Video Games' Top 200 Most Acclaimed Games list:
  • BioShock - Should now have enough support to enter the top 20.
  • Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 - Neither featured in the RPS list. However, both have appeared on several other recent lists, so their rankings will not be terribly altered by their absence here.
  • Mass Effect 2 - This list, coupled with PC Gamer's recent list, has a chance to push Mass Effect 2 into the top 100 in the next list update. This is, I think, quite the achievement for a game that just hit the one-year mark.
  • Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress - Likely become 'bubblers' just missing the top 200, meaning that featuring on another list or two could cement them a place in AVG's list.
  • Syndicate - After dropping off of the AVG list in the most recent update, Syndicate now has a chance at the top 100, which is a curious turn of events for such an old game.
