Joust

173 - Joust

Year: 1982
Platform(s): Arcade
Designer(s): John Newcomer
Developer: Williams Electronics
Publisher: Williams Electronics

"Classic arcade games are full of tortured premises, but Joust may take the prize for the most outrageous "WTF?" storyline. Riding a flying ostrich while carrying a lance in a battle to be king of an underground lava cave? Rookie designer John Newcomer must have been beta-testing some interesting pharmaceuticals in 1982. Thankfully, Joust remains an excellent competitive two-player game to this day, using nothing but three controls: left, right, and flap. Ports don't do the game justice, as no human thumb can flap as fast as a whole hand can tap a "Flap! Flap! Flap!" onto a cabinet face." - GameSpy
